Get the right insurance for a 'learning holiday'

Travellers heading off on a "learning holiday" should take even greater care than usual when selecting travel insurance.

Learning holidays are becoming increasingly popular, as more and more people head abroad to take up new pastimes – from painting to kite-surfing.

A spokesperson for STA Travel stressed the importance of getting the right kind of insurance cover, particularly when going away to engage in potentially risky activities.

"The further you are away from home, or the more secluded your location, the more expensive it would be to repatriate the traveller back to the UK in the case of an accident or illness," the spokesperson warned.

"Adventure activities such as kite-surfing do carry more risk, so it is imperative the passenger is covered for the activity they are taking part in."

The high cost of many learning holidays also provides a good reason to cover oneself against cancellation, the spokesperson added.

Recent figures suggest that 25 per cent of all young travellers have either no insurance or insufficient insurance to get themselves medical care or repatriation in the event of the worst happening.
